Web building and managed hosting, using the methods I teach

Business site tiers. Care & DNS is priced with each business tier — billed monthly, month-to-month.

Personal brand sites

Professionals building a personal brand can buy Web Tier 1 or Web Tier 2 to publish a site about themselves for networking and job searching. The price is the same as the cards below. There is no separate tier.

GREAT VALUE

Tier 1 — Grounded Web Presence

$1,000 – $1,500

  • ▸Responsive, mobile-first, accessible layout
  • ▸Semantic HTML5 and modern CSS
  • ▸Fast load and solid Core Web Vitals basics
  • ▸Basic on-page SEO

  • ▸Uptime monitoring and availability checks
  • ▸Proactive checks when platforms shift

Tier 2 — Modern Dynamic-Static Platform

$2,500 – $4,000

flat project fee

Astro or Hugo with Markdown/MDX — for growing brands, thought leaders, and content creators.

Includes everything in Tier 1, plus:

  • ▸Component architecture
  • ▸MDX publishing workflow
  • ▸Modern typography and layouts
  • ▸Optimized assets, image pipelines, and technical SEO

Advanced Care & DNS · $150/mo (required)

  • ▸Uptime, availability, and DNS management
  • ▸One major content update batch per month (for example 1–10 blog posts, a full copy overhaul, service pages, staff bios, or contact details)

Required for Tier 2 engagements. Billed monthly. Month-to-month — no long-term commitment. Content batches do not include structural layout redesigns or architecture overhauls — those are quoted separately.

Start Tier 2 →

If you chose to keep the site’s code in a git repository, request updates by opening an issue on that repo’s issue board. Those are handled according to your optional Care subscription. You can also email Jeff at [email protected] for an ad hoc content update: $150 minimum per request, content only. Layout or page changes need the $50 / 30-minute scoping call, refundable with purchase.

Included in every build

  • ✓Written scope and fixed price before work starts
  • ✓Source code in a git repository available to you
  • ✓Managed hosting: DNS, TLS certificates, and uptime monitoring (HTTPS)
  • ✓Responsive layout, tested on phone and desktop
  • ✓Launch handover: repo, DNS records, how to request changes

Not included (quoted separately)

  • ×Online stores and payments
  • ×Pages beyond the package count
  • ×Paid ads management
  • ×Photography or video production
  • ×Guaranteed rankings or lead volume (nobody can honestly promise these)

Fixed scope. Fixed price. Changes outside the package are quoted separately before work begins.

Static by default

Static pages: hand-built for Tier 1, or markdown-driven Astro or Hugo for Tier 2. No WordPress database, no plugin patch treadmill.

Versioned

Every site lives in a GitLab repository (yours or mine) with CI/CD. By default I maintain the repository myself, unless you’d rather provide your own git project where the version history is kept.

Managed hosting

I manage DNS, TLS certificates, and uptime monitoring for you.

// why

Why ANotSoI web packages?

ANotSoI web packages are for people who want a site they can own and move, without renting a plugin ecosystem. Here is how that compares to a typical small-business WordPress setup — not a claim that WordPress is never the right tool.

Why ANotSoI web packages compared with a typical WordPress site
// topic Typical WordPress site ANotSoI web package
What runs when someone visits Often PHP plus a database on every request ✓ Pre-built HTML files on a CDN
Upkeep surface CMS core, themes, and plugins that need patching ✓ Static files — no login page or plugin stack to babysit
Who holds the keys Easy to end up locked to a host or page builder ✓ You get a git repository and DNS you control
Content changes Admin UI for everything — including layout risk ✓ Scoped content updates, or Markdown/MDX workflows on Tier 2
When something breaks Can be a plugin conflict or a DB issue at 2 a.m. ✓ Fewer moving parts: static files, with no plugin stack or database in the request path
Fit Fine when you truly need a CMS and plugins ✓ Built for small sites that should stay fast and boring to operate

// faq

FAQ

Is the price really fixed?

Yes. The scope is written down before work starts and the price does not move. Anything outside the package is quoted separately, in writing, before it is done.

Who owns the site?

You do. The source code lives in a git repository available to you, the domain is registered to you, and the site can be moved to another developer or hosting provider without asking permission.

Why not WordPress?

For a 3-to-5 page business site, a database and a plugin stack add patching work and attack surface without adding anything your customers see. Static pages are faster and have far less to break.

What does Care & DNS cover?

Care & DNS is billed monthly, month-to-month, with no long-term commitment. Tier 1 offers optional Care & DNS at $50/mo (uptime monitoring, proactive platform checks, full DNS management and renewal oversight). Tier 2 requires Advanced Care & DNS at $150/mo, which adds one major content update batch per month. Structural redesigns are quoted separately. Cancel anytime — the site keeps working and stays yours. Exact items are listed in your agreement.

How do I request an update?

If you chose to keep the site’s code in a git repository, open an issue on that repo’s issue board. Those requests are handled according to your optional Care subscription. You can also email Jeff at [email protected] for an ad hoc content update: $150 minimum per request, content only. Layout or page changes need the $50 / 30-minute scoping call, refundable with purchase.

How long does a build take?

The timeline is agreed during scoping and written into the agreement. It depends mostly on how quickly content and photos are ready.

Do you use AI to write my site?

Models may help draft or summarize. A person reviews everything, and nothing about your business is stated unless you have confirmed it.

What is the project scoping call?

A paid 30-minute discovery call ($50) with a questionnaire sent ahead. You leave with a clear recommendation and a path forward. The fee is credited toward an approved Tier 1 or Tier 2 web proposal.

What is the AI consultation?

AI Tier 1 is a $250 flat one-hour private session with a pre-session questionnaire and tailored agenda. Where it helps, I may demo my own use cases from my homelab. We look at operational friction and where AI helps versus where it adds complexity. You get a session recording, AI-generated notes, and a written action plan.

Is there a minimum for AI implementation?

AI Tier 2 is $250/hour with an 8-hour minimum (one-day engagement). Work is project-scoped and includes documentation and handoff.

Where is my site hosted?

I manage hosting for you: DNS, TLS certificates, and uptime monitoring, on a fast static hosting platform with HTTPS.
